It is before noon in Nevada. I’ve sold the van and bought a plane ticket back to the place where my mother died eight years ago. I imagine that this time I’ll be able to gain a more lasting resolution, by visiting her grave once more.

As we prepare for take-off, a loud noise can be heard repeating beneath us. One woman exclaims to no one in particular that it sounds like a dog, like a dog trapped down there and it could be a dog because they allow that kind of thing these days and no one smiles at her because maybe they are thinking about the dog and isn’t that sick so the woman says well maybe it’s the belt that carries the luggage up and wouldn’t that be a shame.

Flying over Las Vegas, I watch the shadow of our plane track beige mountains that descend steeply into a body of water so dark it looks as though space has filled the earth and the mountains they are floating and it feels like we’re receding from a world more uncertain than our form overhead.
